Q&A: Why is it so hard to get painpills, when you really need them?

Question by pearl_jam_fan81: Why is it so hard to get painpills, when you really need them?
My lower back kills me all the time because of my SI joints going out of line. How can I get a regular supply of pain medicine without coming across as a drug addict, which i am not. I am just a person in need of pain relief.

Numerous random pains- joint, head(aches), etc.?

Question by Kiyuu: Numerous random pains- joint, head(aches), etc.?
I have random stabbing joint pains, severe headaches, and am seeing random spots and sparkles in my vision. Most headache medicines do not seem to work AT ALL; the ones that do work take a long time to kick in, and I need to take at least two of the “extra strength” ones. The headaches are coming very often right now, and are accompanies by lightheadedness and stuff like that. So… Yeah, I’m wondering if there could be something wrong, or if it’s nothing to worry about.

Hip pain radiating down my leg?

Question by starry_eyes11: Hip pain radiating down my leg?
I have a pain in my hip that feels like a lot of pressure. I just feels like if I changed positions it would feel better, but it never does. It usually gets better if I walk around, but I am in school so I sit a lot. Also, it is almost impossible to sleep because it keeps waking me up. The pain is radiating down my leg, but seems to stay concentrated in the joints (knee and ankle, too). I have felt this before, and went to an orthopedist. They couldn’t find anything and just gave me pain medicine to sleep. Any ideas on what else it could be and they type of doctor I should see?

sounds like sciatica. There are many causes of sciatica. you can have a herniated disc, enlarged piriformis etc. Best bet is to get a lumbar spine X-ray or better imaging (CT/MRI). Let me know if this helps.

Muscle pain from surgery or capsulites still or something else?

Question by skibum_us: Muscle pain from surgery or capsulites still or something else?
I had a fracture on my cunieform bone of the first toe and that has healed (according to the xray). But I had a couple of bones floating around near the navicular bone that they removed. But my toe still hurts and foot. So I went back to the doctor and he said that I have capsulities in the toe joint. So okay he gave me Reflan for a month – still have pain but not as bad with the medicine. My toe still hurts with pain radiating up – and when I walk – every once in awhile it will just give me a stabbing pain and I can’t put weight on it. Sort of like giving out, that feeling. There is no swelling except below where the doctor cut into my foot. Help please.

possible diagnosis for my symptoms?

Question by Mike: possible diagnosis for my symptoms?
I am a 19 year-old male. I am a vegetarian (no fish or poultry). I eat fairly healthy (I indulge here and there, but overall I have a balanced well maintained diet) I was very physically active in the past and lived a fairly rural section of New Jersey. I was outdoors probably around 8 to 12 hours a day for a few years (plenty of ticks have bitten me, though I pulled out the heads almost always cleanly when I had the chance. I only recall one that stuck in my knee and I am not positive if it was all removed. I did not notice a rash).

For the past few years I have noticed several symptoms that I just read as being attributed to Lyme disease(I found a tick on my foot this morning, I am not a hypochondriac ;] ) including:

fatigue, uncharacteristic lethargy, fairly bad muscle and joint pain(usually after physical activity, but not always), trouble falling asleep (hours of laying in bed tired without falling asleep), my vision has gradually decreased (rapidly developed floaters/some mild light sensitivity/decreases of peripheral vision/some blurred vision), excessive sweating, feeling of constant uncomfortable warmth(cold and warm weather external, but temperature shows no sign of fevers), random weight fluctuation (I’ve lost 20 pounds in 2 weeks, 10 pounds another week,(weight fluctuated around 145 lbs at 5’10″~) and gain it back randomly, about a year or two after I remember symptoms beginning, I noticed a change in bowel movements, though this was also after jaw surgery (broken in a fight) . I used to be extremely smart and had no difficulty concentrating on anything, but approximately 2-4 years ago my memory and concentration rapidly became declined (concentration first, then memory.)

I do not have much money, but I am on my parent’s health insurance. I would prefer not to get tested unless my odds are high of having Lyme disease, which most of these symptoms seem to lead me toward believing. I have read that health insurance will not cover the test (or the treatment), but I am not sure if this is fact or if it’s just a shady rumor.) Not to mention, if I have had these problems for several years, is it less likely that they are caused by Lyme disease (several symptoms have gotten slightly worse over time)

short version:
19 years old outdoors fairly often – fatigue/muscle and joint problems/vision issues/insomnia/memory problems/weight fluctuation/excess sweating/warm feeling (no fever): diagnosis? is it likely Lyme disease/if so approximately how much does the test cost (Insured)

Last thing– I realize that a lot of these may just be due to aging. (though I’m pretty young to be experiencing many of the problems that are listed)

(the muscle pain is fairly severe (breaking the jaw was about as bad before the pain medicine). if i run a fairly short distance (under a few miles) i get shin splints and calf/ankle pain and can’t run for several weeks, despite skateboarding and biking regularly (which are becoming increasingly painful))

thanks in advanced! sorry about the length. i didn’t want to leave anything out.

I am suffering continuous body ache, knee, hip, fingers – joint pain from last 6 months, pl advise.?

Question by sri2530: I am suffering continuous body ache, knee, hip, fingers – joint pain from last 6 months, pl advise.?
I am taking ayurvedic medicines from last 4 months from Dr Smita Naram at Malad (W), but not relief, pain is increasing day by day after started medicines. First spondilotis then knee paining and now all joints, can’t sit, stand, sleep comfortably. Doint pranayam, exercises and following all diet given by dr. Dr is saying this is because of aamvat – but i have no indigestion, no acidity – stomach is clean in the morning. Since 6 am to 11 pm, i am busy. But now it has become very difficult to do it. pl advise.

Perhaps it is time to try another Dr.
Even very good Drs sometimes are unable
to effectively treat all patients.

I would suggest having another medical
facility evaluate you to see if they have some
other ideas. Drs may still be worthy
of respect even if they are unable to
perfectly treat everyone. Less than
perfect results do not necessarily diminish either Dr
or patient, but may build frustrations
to both.

Answer by jackie_jabar
The diet coke can leach the calcium from your body and that would not help the arthritis. You have two very painful medical conditions that are difficult to treat. You might want to consider going on the Arthritis Diet which eliminates food that trigger the pain.
