Is this really considered ‘dr shopping’?

Question by Eraserhead: Is this really considered ‘dr shopping’?
So i’ve had the same dr for a few years. Lately i’ve had a ton of pain, so I get checked by an ortho and it turns out I have very severe arthritis in my lower joints (knees, ankles). My dr will only prescribe NSAID’s, which I can’t take due to a stomach problem. So he says “take tylenol, and learn to live with the pain.”
So I said I wanted a second opinion, because tylenol doesn’t work and i’m in so much pain I can barely walk some days. He told me that if I saw another dr, that would be dr shopping and I would get arrested for that. So I feel stuck. I just want my pain to be treated- i’m not an addict or anything.

Wow! He’s a real winner!! Get another doctor! You can see as many as you want. It’s “shopping around” to find the best person to do the job right. I don’t get it. Does he think he is the Doctor God???

You should see a doctor for sure. You could have damaged tendons, ligaments and more. I would keep suggesting you see a doctor to your parents.

Lower Back pain started day after lifting, bike ride, IF it is a herniated disc, wouldnt it be felt instantly?

Question by SanDiego21: Lower Back pain started day after lifting, bike ride, IF it is a herniated disc, wouldnt it be felt instantly?
Thursday: bought and lifted bike into truck,
no pain felt, went on bike ride same day all okay then , next morning pain was felt in lower back. Been ice/heat with not much success after a week. Hurts worse when i sit, and is better walking. Have slight tingling off and on in inner side of knee just above calf, but no “Shooting pains” down leg or butt. Does this sound like disc or muscle and is a week still to early to be worried?

Best answer:

Answer by k m
The shooting pain sounds like something (probably the disc )is pressing on the sciatic nerve. If it is a herniated / slipped disc then the only cure is rest, ice/heat and meds (pain/muscle relaxant). There is also chiropractors, massage therapy, ect.. but unless your properly diagnosed I wouldn’t go those routes. It takes 1 1/2 to 2wks for the intense pain to go and it takes 6mo’s + for a herniated disc to completly return to normal so even after the pain is gone you’ll have to be cautious in what you do. Once healed you can concentrate on strenthing your core muscle esp the abdomin as these take a lot of stress of your back.

Q&A: Why do I hurt so much?? Arthritis this young?

Question by Rae: Why do I hurt so much?? Arthritis this young?
I wasn’t quite sure where to post this because I don’t know what’s going on – but I figured this must be close. About 9 months ago, I was really sick with the flu. I woke up at about 3 am in the fetal position unable to move any of my joints. I was in so much pain – my hands were even stuck. I ended up at the doctor a few hours later who told me it was simply the flu, disregarding my extreme joint pain. I’ve had to flu before and the pains were not comparable. Ever since then, I get sporadic episodes of severe shooting pains through both forearms, into my wrists, and through my fingers. During this time my left knee will flare up and I’ll be unable to put pressure on it. Sometimes my ankles will start bothering me as well as my toes. It almost feels like the “growing pains” I’d get in my feet as a kid. This episode, however, I feel like I was hit by a bus. Every nerve in my body hurts. Every joint in my body hurts. My whole body is stiff and it hurts to stand up or sit down. I will often get pins and needles quite frequently, but only during my episodes of pain. What could be going on?

Q&A: Growing pains at 19, female, haven’t grown an inch in years..?

Question by : Growing pains at 19, female, haven’t grown an inch in years..?
I’m 19 years old, I haven’t grown at all in years, and I am still having “growing-pains”. I have normal periods, I had a bout of Mono two years ago, I am in remission from aplstic anemia, and I have Raynaud’s Syndrome. I get these pains in my ankles, knees, hips, and sometimes my shoulders, and I get them often. Could I have some type of arthritis? Is there anything that I Should be concerned about? Or is this normal for my age?

It’s unlikely to be growing pains but related to some of your previous medical conditions.

Weight gain, nausea, fatigue?

Question by : Weight gain, nausea, fatigue?
I’m 18 and lately I have been gaining weight (I am usually pretty thin), feel like throwing up constantly, and sleep the day away, feeling apathetic, irritable, and withdrawn when I am awake. My feet and ankles also have stabbing “growing pains”, and I rarely feel hungry. Any ideas what this could be? It’s definitely not normal for me.

What is wrong with the VA?

Question by mk3SoupRah: What is wrong with the VA?
Apparently my ankle is bad enough to be in a boot for the next 3 weeks.
But it, “isn’t necessary to prescribe anything for chronic pain.”, as the doctor would put it.
IT HURTS! They used to prescribe me hydrocodone 5mg and it was perfect. I was supposed to take one every 6 hours. I would maybe take one a day. Then my prescription ran out and I tried taking Tylenol and Advil instead. They do not work at all. I don’t understand if one of the reasons I am receiving disability is chronic pain, why can I not receive the pain meds I was previously taking?
What can I do?

See if they have a pain center and make an appointment. Pain centers really do understand pain and you may get the relief you need.

How long might it take for severe sprain + fractured lower fibula to heal?

Question by : How long might it take for severe sprain + fractured lower fibula to heal?
5 weeks ago tomorrow (on 6/11/10) fell off an curb obstructed by leaves directly on to black top…have been diagnosed with a severe ankel sprain and fracture of fibula close to ankle! Pain has been unrelenting even with almost complete rest/ice/compression (in a boot!) and elevation…also use crutches when needed.

I’ve never had a sprain like this and the only other thing I ever broke is a toe on my other foot…people I know with fractures say it doesn’t hurt much…if it is a “severe sprain’ I’m really wondering why none of my docs has ordered an MRI yet? I see the Ortho doc again in one week..then it will have been 6 wks since my incident.

Am finally off Vicodin, which I took at night to be able to get relief from pain and be able to sleep…but now that I’ve had this boot on I realized today I cannot voluntarily move my 3 middle toes!
Just wondering if this might be considered normal?

My Chiro seems to think no ligaments tore off the bone since my foot doesn’t flop around…but I wish one of these guys could give me a better idea about how long the healing might take and how much pain is “normal pain”.

Have never experienced anything like this and I am a life long athlete..cannot believe it happened at a curb going in to the street, but then, I’m grateful I didn’t crack my head open!
Any one have any thing similar or any docs have advice?

Thanks!

Okay, you have to have your parents, or somebody stop by a cvs, and pick you up some tylenol arthritis pain killers, I can’t answer how long, because I have never broken anything besides a big toe, but I used to get bad sprains all the time…

take a pain killer, and if it isn’t better in an hour, take another…
The only reason it needs to be for arthritis, is because a pain killer is just a pain killer, but if this pain killer is able to help people with arthritis, it can certainly knock out the pain of a sever sprain…
Trust me, it will work like a charm… :D

Q&A: I have been assigned Physical Therapy exercises for a knee injury, can someone help me understand them?

Question by Michelle S: I have been assigned Physical Therapy exercises for a knee injury, can someone help me understand them?
Injury: Left knee, I have a completely torn ACL, partially torn MCL, bone bruise and am told that my bruised lateral meniscus.

Unfortunately, my Dr. got annoyed when I ask detailed questions and his male nurse goes into attack mode in front of other patients, PT can’t get me in for 3 weeks, so here I am.

1. Weight Bearing: When I am told to bear weight on my knee, does this mean my full body weight or the weight of my leg or?

2. Supported Knee Bends: With or without the hinged brace? My knee is so swollen again that the brace inhibits some motion, but I don’t know if I should do this without the protection of the brace?

3. Pain: I already hurt myself the first time I did these exercises and am just trying to understand what’s normal pain and what’s “I’m causing more damage pain.” The pain at my knee cap and MCL are there and I mentally prepared myself for it, but the pain at the lateral meniscus is excruciating. I am told this is only a bruise, but it’s popping and rolling to the left over something. When I did these deep knee bends at 14 days, my knee got so loose that any lateral movement (getting out of bed) caused it to roll and pop to the left and then it comes back – and this is with the hinged brace on tight. The next day the knee calf and foot swelled up to the point the bottom of my foot cracked. I can completely straighen it and as long as it’s locked, I can stop the rolling/popping. What can I do, when doing knee bends to protect my meniscus and stop the rolling/grinding/popping? I have to re-establish range of motion and I think he said I was only at about 30 degrees and he wants me full range, foot to my rear in 6 weeks. I really need help with this one.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

when your knee is swollen and you feel pain do not exercise, dont put your body weight on your knee, use some support – walking stick, please get some help from specialists, the best way is going private, they should help you,

i have had problems since i was 13y old, they told me all that sh/t, and of course they could not fix it, after 12y of my right knee problems now i dont even care, it turned chronic, the worst pain is when the weather changes, i can feel it in my knee

good luck with this one
