How long might it take for severe sprain + fractured lower fibula to heal?

Question by : How long might it take for severe sprain + fractured lower fibula to heal?
5 weeks ago tomorrow (on 6/11/10) fell off an curb obstructed by leaves directly on to black top…have been diagnosed with a severe ankel sprain and fracture of fibula close to ankle! Pain has been unrelenting even with almost complete rest/ice/compression (in a boot!) and elevation…also use crutches when needed.

I’ve never had a sprain like this and the only other thing I ever broke is a toe on my other foot…people I know with fractures say it doesn’t hurt much…if it is a “severe sprain’ I’m really wondering why none of my docs has ordered an MRI yet? I see the Ortho doc again in one week..then it will have been 6 wks since my incident.

Am finally off Vicodin, which I took at night to be able to get relief from pain and be able to sleep…but now that I’ve had this boot on I realized today I cannot voluntarily move my 3 middle toes!
Just wondering if this might be considered normal?

My Chiro seems to think no ligaments tore off the bone since my foot doesn’t flop around…but I wish one of these guys could give me a better idea about how long the healing might take and how much pain is “normal pain”.

Have never experienced anything like this and I am a life long athlete..cannot believe it happened at a curb going in to the street, but then, I’m grateful I didn’t crack my head open!
Any one have any thing similar or any docs have advice?

Thanks!

Okay, you have to have your parents, or somebody stop by a cvs, and pick you up some tylenol arthritis pain killers, I can’t answer how long, because I have never broken anything besides a big toe, but I used to get bad sprains all the time…

take a pain killer, and if it isn’t better in an hour, take another…
The only reason it needs to be for arthritis, is because a pain killer is just a pain killer, but if this pain killer is able to help people with arthritis, it can certainly knock out the pain of a sever sprain…
Trust me, it will work like a charm… :D

I broke my ankle last January, well technically fractured it in three places. Bones take about a year to completely heal. It will take some time. Be patient and follow doctor’s orders. Good luck.
